Myeloma UK

Why we are promoting Myeloma UK

Like most businesses, Polaris Telecoms exists to make a profit and provide a livelihood for our people.  At the same time, we believe it is very important to keep everything in perspective.  Life does not revolve around the next sale.  So we encourage employees and our customers, in fact everyone to support charities, voluntary organisations and community initiatives.

As a company, we have elected to support Myeloma UK, a relatively young charity which is active in supporting those suffering from Myeloma, together with their family and friends, as well as the medical and scientific communities who are active in treating and researching the condition.

What is Myeloma?

Myeloma, also known as Multiple Myeloma, is a type of bone marrow cancer arising from plasma cells, which are normally found in the bone marrow.  Plasma cells form part of your immune system.  Normal plasma cells produce antibodies to help fight infection.  In Myeloma, abnormal plasma cells release only one type of antibody known as paraprotein which has no useful function, but it is often through the measurement of this paraprotein that Myeloma is diagnosed and monitored.

In Myeloma, the DNA of a plasma cell is damaged causing it to become malignant or cancerous.  Unlike many cancers, Myeloma does not exist as a lump or tumour. Instead, the Myeloma cells normally divide and expand within the bone marrow.  Myeloma affects multiple (hence Multiple Myeloma) places in the body where bone marrow is normally active in an adult, i.e. within the bones of the spine, skull, pelvis, the rib cage, and the areas around the shoulders and hips.

Raising Awareness

One of the core objectives of the charity is to raise awareness of this illness and to ensure optimum access to treatments and standards of care.  This year (2007) Myeloma Awareness Week runs from the 21st to 28th June.

Myeloma UK has much in common with other cancer charities and many shared goals.  They work with several cancer coalitions to campaign for improvements in general cancer service and care, which in turn has a positive effect on Myeloma.

Help Polaris to help Myeloma UK

Polaris Telecoms are not only offering Myeloma UK direct support, we are also partnering the charity in an affinity scheme.  Our products and services will be offered to supporters of Myeloma UK at very competitive prices.  All related sales will carry a commission sharing agreement with the charity, providing a continuous and increasing revenue stream to help support their work.

Our Patron
Maureen Lipman CBE

Maureen Lipman CBE is the first Honorary Patron of Myeloma UK.

Speaking about her appointment, "Myeloma is a less well known cousin to leukaemia that has a devastating affect on patients and their families - it has to ours when we lost my beloved husband Jack.  I want to help raise awareness of the disease, treatment and research, in the hope of finding a permanent cure.

I don't want anybody to go through what we have gone through because of this little known and violent disease.  I will do whatever I can to further the aims of Myeloma UK."
